Curriculum response to Covid-19
Remote learning
Highlands School worked continually to improve its remote learning provision. During the second lockdown all students followed their usual time table and received a blend of live and pre-recorded lessons. All lessons were designed in accordance with the Rosenshine’s principles. This approach enabled:
- the curriculum to be implemented consistently
- students’ work and progress to be tracked systematically
- students to interact regularly with their teachers
- teachers check, and address, misconceptions
- teacher to adopt a responsive approach to curriculum delivery
Highlands School has retained the ability to deliver online lessons. This enables the school to provide high quality learning for students who may have to self-isolate.

Summer school provision
The DfE have made funding available to help students who have missed learning during the school lockdown. The EEF finds that, on average, pupils attending a summer school can make up to 4 months progress if the summer school offers small group tuition led by highly-trained teaching staff. Highlands School plans to run a summer school over the summer break. The summer school will focus on numeracy and literacy, but also offer enrichment opportunities, targeting our most vulnerable and disadvantaged students to help them make a smooth transition into secondary school.
